Why is self-esteem so important?

Your child's self-esteem – their opinion of themselves - impacts on every aspect of their lives - their ability to learn, to believe in themselves and to face new situations and challenges with confidence; how they communicate their opinions, feelings and needs; the friends they choose for themselves; how they resolve conflict, and their ability to deal with bullying. It determines how they manage with their feelings, and how they feel about themselves. By helping your child to build their self-esteem, you enable them to tackle all areas of their lives with feelings of confidence and calm, based on a deep belief that they matter.

Unfortunately, the world we live in doesn't always support our belief in our self-esteem. We live in a world which is often negative and critical, pointing us to take note of our faults and inadequacies, and evaluating our value and worth based on our behaviour. By learning about self-esteem, and integrating this into the way we raise our children, we have an opportunity to alert our children to a different way of thinking about themselves.

Workshop Objectives:

  • To alert parents to the benefits of healthy self-esteem
  • To teach parents basic skills so that they can encourage their children to begin thinking differently about themselves
  • To give parents practical tools to help their children feel good about themselves as unique individuals
  • To facilitate insight and feelings of confidence and calm in parents

Workshop information:

Workshops are run on Thursday, Friday or Saturday mornings, from 9am-2pm, at a cost of R550 per person. A workbook and refreshments are provided.
